The Journey

This is Texas Tommy

Tommy Yau traded Hong Kong for a passport full of stamps and a seat at the toughest games he could find. This is the road from curiosity to WPT Global Ambassador — and it's still being written.

Texas Tommy on the road — US Poker Cruise
The short version

A game of
incomplete information

Poker pulled me in because it rewards the thing I can't stop doing — trying to figure out what someone else is thinking. Every hand is a puzzle built out of incomplete information, and the players who win are the ones who ask better questions.

I didn't inherit a bankroll or a shortcut. I came up chasing the game around the world — one buy-in, one flight, and one lesson at a time. That grind is the whole point, and it's why the way I teach actually sticks.

Chapter by chapter

Where I came from,
where I'm headed

Hong Kong

Where it started

Home was Hong Kong — where I first fell for the game and the endless puzzle of reading people. That curiosity turned into hours of study and a decision I never regretted: to take poker seriously and see how far it could take me.

The Road

Traveling to conquer the high stakes

To grow, I had to go where the games were. I built a base in Toronto and started chasing action across the US circuit — Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, and Florida — and even the US Poker Cruise. Tougher games, bigger swings, faster lessons. This is where the craft got real — battling in competitive line-ups like Champions Club Texas alongside peers such as Outlaw, Ham, Thai, and The Commish.

The Camera

Sharing the journey with the gents

I started filming sessions and breaking hands down out loud — street by street, assigning ranges, sizing bets, exploiting the table. Not to show off, but because teaching a concept is the fastest way to truly understand it. Bankroll challenges, travel vlogs, and honest downswings turned viewers into a real community — in English and on a dedicated Cantonese channel.

The Partnership

Becoming a WPT Global Ambassador

Signing with WPT Global — the official online poker room of the World Poker Tour — was a milestone I don't take for granted. It's where I put in online volume and where my community can sit in the same games with me, straight from their phone.

What's Next

Building something bigger

More content, more coaching, and more ways to bring people into the game the right way. The goal has never changed: help players stop guessing and start thinking. If that's you — let's get to work.

How I think about the game

The house rules

Reads over rules

Charts get you to the table. Reading the actual human across from you is what wins the money.

Process over results

One session tells you nothing. Good decisions, repeated a thousand times, tell you everything.

Honesty over ego

The fastest way to improve is to get brutally honest about your leaks. That's exactly what coaching is for.
